By the Breath of His Mouth

I tilted my head toward the inky night sky, scattered with countless twinkling, bright stars. The moon was there too. It shone with the elegant brilliance of a pearl.

My heart was captivated, enraptured, awed at the wonders wrought by the hands of the Lord–by His Word, by the breath of His mouth. To think, He created each star–not one of them goes unnoticed, uncounted, or unnamed. He knows them all by name.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. –Psalm 147:3-5

This is the same God who spoke the world into being and was made flesh for me, for you, for entire humanity {Gen. 1; John 1}. Every broken place in my broken heart is seen. He draws near to in my brokenness and binds my wounds, for with His, I am healed {Is. 53}. Just like the stars, He knows our names, and the names of our every sin, every scar, every secret. He does not shrink from them, but willingly bore them in His own body on the tree. There is nothing whatsoever we have to do to pay the price to breach the impossible gap between us and God. Only His Son could do this, our only Mediator who can atone with His perfect purity–keeping the law for our sake. It is in Christ alone we find forgiveness, hope, rest, peace.  Stars are threads woven across the heavens that God has fashioned to speak to the souls of man of His glory.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun…

So, the next time a flicker of doubt tries to darken the hope of these sure promise, please, tilt your head to look up into the shining brilliance of the stars dusted across the night sky and remember…

By the Word of the LORD were the heavens made; & all the whole host of them by the breath of His mouth.”  -Psalm 33:6
